Bridge Street Update   From the City of Las Vegas and NMHU

Highlands University is repaving National from 8th to 12th Streets.  The work will only take a few days…they hope!  Be patient, Las Vegas.  We just can’t complain about potholes AND inconvenience when streets are being repaved.

In our own words…progress continues, but no major changes to report.
Bridge Street remains closed Monday through Thursday, unless there is a delay with the work.  When/if work is delayed or shuts down during the day, Bridge Street will be open to traffic.  So check it out!
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Bridge Street will be open to traffic, but not parking.
Most businesses remain open.
Valencia is open one way for West-bound traffic only.  Ignoring the one-way sign could earn you a moving violation.
Moreno is open one-way for East-bound traffic only.

The business owners are discussing the possibilities of promotions to keep locals coming to Bridge and the Plaza, advertising to attract tourists to Old Town, and the possibilities for grants to help restore some of the lost income.

Next meeting for area businesses & City staff
at 9:30 am Monday, October 25.
Las Vegas Arts Council – Gallery 140 – 140 Bridge Street

There’s parking in the Valencia Street Lot,
Our Lady of Sorrows parking off Valencia,
all around the Plaza,
LVPD parking lot on West National and South Pacific,
in the West Las Vegas Administration Parking off Moreno,
and on HU Campus, north off National on 11th St.

Tuesday evenings 6:30 – 8:00 P.M.
All safe practices are in place.  Bring your own water and music.  We are sitting 6 feet apart and of course everything is disinfected prior

to your arrival.   The only door open is the 8th street ramp door – for safety reasons.  Contact Amy Hufnal.

Our June show,
is now open

Parry Primroses by award-winning watercolorist Jane Fritz won first place
in a Facebook contest run on the Las Vegas Arts Council’s Facebook album March Masterpiece Contest.  Jane also curated our June show, Splash!

Five talented Las Vegas area artists accepted the challenge! We uploaded their entries into an album, and Parry Primrose earned the most likes before midnight Friday, April 3.  The (drum roll, please) grand prize was (fanfare, please) a roll of toilet paper! And if that doesn’t sound like a great prize, you don’t remember April 2020!

Jane is a very good sport!

The City of Las Vegas has joined hands with its educational partners, New Mexico Highlands University, Luna Community College, the United World College, Las Vegas City and West Las Vegas Public Schools to create “Vecinos Juntos”. Vecinos Juntos is an organization that embraces the spirit of neighbors helping neighbors to improve the quality of life for individual Las Vegas residents and for the entire Las Vegas community. The mission of Vecinos Juntos is “to make volunteerism a force for promoting the concept that we are all neighbors sharing an uncommon commitment for the common good.”
Citizens wishing to volunteer may contact City Liaison Loretta Martin at or phone 505-454-1401 x 1003

The New Mexico Highlands University Foundation has announced two new challenge grants to add fine art prints by New Mexico artists to the Foundation’s art collection.  Every $100 contribution to the Foundation’s Friends of Art will be matched by another generous donor, resulting in acquisition of a print by Northern New Mexico artist Willard Clark (1910-1992).  For every new member joining the Friends of Art, another donor will add a print by Contemporary New Mexico artist Eli Levin (b. 1938).  The Foundation hosts one of the finest collections of prints in the region, and joining the Friends of Art will make it even better.  Contact the Foundation at (505) 454-3248 or
